The Realm of Whispering Ghosts

If Truman met Einstein

The play opens in bardo, the Buddhist afterlife, where a young Japanese woman who perished in the bombing of Hiroshima encounters the spirit of an American soldier she met when he was a prisoner of war. Realizing they are outside the bounds of time and space, they set about trying to influence the decision process that led to the dropping of the atomic bomb. As they try to intervene in history, we become involved in the struggles of both American and Japanese leaders.

The play addresses the question: If anyone could have influenced Truman’s decision, who would it be? Truman and Einstein never met – but what if they had? It is not necessarily easy to change history, as Tomiko and Frank learn – nor even to determine what is right and what is wrong. The play explores the consequences, sometimes tragic, of miscommunication and misunderstanding.

Two acts, unit set, cast of ten (with doubling): gender flexible for many parts.
